Electrophoretic Band Patterns of Stylar Proteins Self - , Cross , and Non - pollinated Hibiscus syriacus L .

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-incompatibility and stylar protein patterns of Hibiscus syriacus L. The amount of total soluble protein of unpollinated style was measured by densitometer after electrophoresis at 0, 3, 6,and 9 hours after anthesis. And the changes in electrophoretic patterns of stylar proteins between several compatible and incompatible cross combinations were detected 6 hours after pollination.
The total protein increased in self-compatible plants with the lapse of time. In self-incompatible plants, however, the protein decreased until 6 hours after anthesis and increased thereafter.
One unique protein peak, i, was highly associated with the self-incompatibility reactions studied. The amount of i protein was unchanged in unpollinated and self-pollinated styles of self-incompatible plants after anthesis, whereas it decreased in both self-pollinated styles of self-compatible plants and all cross- pollinated styles. These results show that the i protein may not be S-allele specific and probably decreased by products of S-locus linked genes in case of compatible pollination.
